Predefined Data types in SAP ABAP

By Predefined data types we mean data types that are elementary.  The following are the pre-defined data types.

Character Data Types

  1. CHAR – C
  2. STRING – S
  3. DATE – YYYYMMDD
  4. TIME – HHMMSS
  5. XSTRING – XS
  6. HEXA DECIMAL – X

Character is a very fundamental character string that contains one character. A string is a set of characters. Date is an 8 character numeric string. Time is a 6 character numeric string. Hexa Decimal is normally used in graphics where ASCII cannot be used.

Integer Data Types

  1. Integer – I
  2. Floating Point – F
  3. Numeric – N
  4. Packed Decimal – P

Numeric is only used in situations where pure numbers are required to be stored in a variable – Example, phone numbers, postal code etc. Do NOT use it for arithmetic calculations.  Floating point sacrifices accuracy for performance, since it allows rounding up. The opposite of that is packed decimal which does not round up decimals. Both packed decimals and floating point are used for decimal point calculation.
